This post has an updated version of the video that DOES not have the bottom of the frame cropped off.
And there used to be a ballpark where the field was warm and green….
Steve, Alan Lustig, Alan’s father and Dad went to the Polo Grounds for a Saturday doubleheader. I know it was a Saturday doubleheader because I remember the 3 of us drove to Port Washington to pick up Dad on the way to the game. He worked half days on Saturday. Date of games is July 7, 1962.
In the video, number 14 for the Mets is Gil Hodges. Number 18 for the Mets is Felix Mantilla. Number 25 for the Mets is Frank Thomas. You can also see Ken Boyer (14) taking some swings and Stan Musial with his recognizable stance.
The end of the video shows Cardinal’s catcher Gene Oliver laying in the dirt after taking a pitched ball to the face. As I recall, it may have went though the mask, but I’m not sure. Number 7 for the Mets, standing over Oliver, is Elio Chacon. The groundout just before that is Marv Throneberry.
The Mets won the first game. Here is the Box Score.
St. Louis won the second game. Here is the Box Score. The video shows Musial scoring on Ken Boyer’s home run with Boyer right behind him. Musial also hit a home run in this game. Video also shows Stan Musial and Red Schoendienst warming up right in front of us before the second game. Also note Joe Christopher sliding head first into second base on a steal of second.
